Sedgwick County Jail

Closing Advice

Interview with Roderick

JM: Is there anything else you would want a friend or family member to know if they have a loved one going to jail?
Roderick: The highlight of every day is mail call. You literally live to hear if you received mail that day or not so please, please, drop your inmate a line or even a greeting card. If you are able, make sure they've got at LEAST a few dollars on their books because they are for REAL going to be hungry. And don't be afraid to report any injustices the inmate may tell you about to a sergeant on duty. When outside calls are made things get done.

JM: Is there anything else you would recommend to a future inmate?
Roderick: If you are going to do an extended stay then prepare yourself to lay down and take a nap. Dwelling on what is or isn't happening on the outside will make you insane fast. Since all you've got to do is think you might want to take the time to be honest with yourself about what it is that put you there, what you need to do to avoid going back, and was it worth the loss of your freedom and the time you can never have back.
