Sedgwick County Jail

Meals

Interview with Roderick

JM: How many meals did you get per day?
Roderick: You received three meals a day unless you we're on a special diet for things such as diabetes or pregnant in which case you are given three meals as well as three snacks per day.

JM: How would you rate the food?
Roderick: Recently in the local newspaper there was an expose on the food in Sedgwick County Detention Facility. An adminstrator of the jail as well as a local newswoman went " undercover" and their opinion was that the food was unfit for human or animal consumption and that the portions provided bordered on malnurishment. Due to this media attention the facility remapped it's nutrition menus and if you ask me its even worse now. The only positive change to come from this is that you are now given fresh fruit and vegetables once a day.

JM: Did you have any favorite/least favorite meals?
Roderick: Every 5th Sunday of the month you got hard as cement burritos with rice and beans and this was a favorite. Also the apple or peach crisp was out of this world deliscous!!! But the tuna noodle casserole was utterly revolting.

JM: Were there any other snacks offered outside of meals?
Roderick: Only special diets received any snacks and the trustees we're given a sack lunch with 2 sandwiches, a bag of chips, a cookie and a carton of milk every night which they were not allowed to share under any circumstances whatsoever but still manage to sneak to regular inmates. Other than that, any other snack foods must be bought on commisary.
